Lab Packing: Laboratory Chemical Disposal Services

The proper disposal of miscellaneous chemicals packaged in small containers is a common problem for industry, laboratories, and institutions.  The list of inventory chemicals to be removed from a site can vary widely in USDOT hazard class and quantity, and many chemicals are outdated or no longer used.  The procedure to package these materials for disposal is recognized by the USEPA and USD0T as lab packing.

ESI has developed procedures to safely and efficiently handle and dispose of hazardous chemical wastes stored in small containers by laboratories and related facilities.  Our qualified laboratory chemists and technicians provide proper segregation, packaging, and labeling of all waste materials so that they are acceptable for highway and/or rail transportation to the appropriate treatment, storage, and disposal facilities.  Both unknown and trade-named wastes are characterized in the field.  If a waste cannot be identified, a composite sample is analyzed to identify the proper hazard class, packaging, and treatment for the waste.

To aid in the efficient and effective removal of these wastes, ESI has developed an electronic database of more than 15,000 chemicals.  Each is classified by USDOT hazard class, packaging group, and treatment options.  This database, which is continually updated, shows the proper shipping name for the chemical as well as all applicable USD0T and USEPA classification and labeling requirements.  The system also acts as a source of waste tracking from point of origin to ultimate treatment and/or disposal.

Treatment and disposal methods available to ESI’s lab pack clients include destructive incineration, burning as alternative fuels, neutralization, stabilization, reactive treatment, land disposal, other special waste treatments, and recycling or reuse.

Lab pack personnel include field chemists, environmental compliance personnel, a reactive specialist, field supervisors, and environmental technicians.

ESI offers safe and reliable solutions for the management and disposal of your organization’s surplus laboratory chemicals.
